Your Fort Lauderdale Weekend: A Coastal Cleanup, a Live Album, and a Little Hispanic Heritage
This weekend brings the 41st Annual International Coastal Cleanup on Broward's beaches Saturday morning, Elsten Torres recording a live album at the Amaturo Theater downtown, and the Viva Fort Lauderdale exhibit open all three days at the New River Inn on the Riverwalk. Here is what is worth Friday through Sunday, and where each one sits.
Saturday Morning: The 41st Annual International Coastal Cleanup
Broward County runs its stretch of the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, September 19, from 9 a.m. to noon. This is the 41st year. Last year more than 1,800 volunteers turned out countywide and pulled more than 5,200 pounds of trash off the sand.
It sounds like a small civic errand. It is not. Three hours on the beach in September is the fastest way to learn how this shoreline actually behaves north and south of the inlet.
Registration is by site through the Ocean Conservancy, and Broward County's Marine Resources Section assigns the locations. As of this writing the 2026 Fort Lauderdale site list had not been posted. Call Marine Resources at 954-519-1270 to confirm your beach before you drive out.
What to bring:
- Water, more than you think
- Closed shoes, not flip-flops
- Sun protection for three hours of open beach
The county does not cancel for rain. It cancels only for a tropical system.
Saturday Night: Elsten Torres Records a Live Album at the Amaturo
Elsten Torres plays the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center on Saturday, September 19, at 7:30 p.m. The Grammy-nominated artist is recording the night. It becomes his 15th album and his first live one.
The show is called From Fulano to Forever. It covers 30 years, from his 1996 band Fulano through new music he has not released yet. Expect guest appearances and reworked older material.
The Amaturo is the mid-size room at the Broward Center, 201 SW 5th Avenue, on the west end of the Riverwalk. The performance is part of the Amplify Arts Series.
All Weekend: Viva Fort Lauderdale at the New River Inn
Viva Fort Lauderdale: Celebrating Hispanic Art and Culture opened Thursday, September 17, at History Fort Lauderdale. It runs through October 25.
The exhibit sits in the New River Inn at 231 SW 2nd Avenue, right on the Riverwalk. Doors are open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Docent-led tours run at 1, 2 and 3 p.m.
The exhibition itself is free. General museum admission still applies if you want the rest of the campus:
- Adults, $15
- Seniors, $12
- Students ages 6 through 22 with valid ID, $7
- Members, military and children 6 and under, free
If You Are Out Late
Emo Night Brooklyn lands at Revolution Live on Saturday, with doors at 10:30 p.m. It is a DJ dance party, not a band. Revolution sits downtown, a few blocks from the New River Inn.
Where These Sit
Three of the four are downtown, inside a ten-minute walk of each other. The New River Inn, the Broward Center and Revolution Live all sit in the Riverwalk district. That is why Saturday works as one trip instead of three.
The cleanup is the outlier. It is on the beach, east of the Intracoastal, and it wants your whole morning.
What This Says About Where You Live
Weekends like this are the argument for specific streets in this city, not for Fort Lauderdale in general. Lourdes Maestres has spent 17 years selling luxury real estate here. She can tell you which addresses put you a ten-minute walk from the Riverwalk and which ones put you 25 minutes and a drawbridge away.
If you are weighing a move in Fort Lauderdale, reach out to Lourdes and the MPH Team. We will tell you what that walk actually looks like from the homes you are considering.
